e-pims began as a research project, analysing man-hour deployment of component production in accordance with specific requirements. e-pims is an information system that integrates the user into a digitized information supply chain. The production planning process is logistically large, integrated and complex. e-pims focuses on increasing efficiency, involving in-depth analysis of the human-computer interface. The employee is redefined as the human-entity, fully integrated in the information supply chain. The most frequently occurring process failures (human factors) become transparent and traceable.

Past developments in software relate to the component, material tracking data capture during production. This approach gives rise to an imbalance in relation to the analysis of cost and use of software. Non-standardisation of software gives rise to imprecise information flows (hand-offs) and increases production cost. Production is cross-functional, involving a variety of departments including Personnel, Planning, Logistics, QA/QC, and Engineering. e-pims was designed by the principles of CIM, with a strong emphasis on integration.

German, French and English languages were selected for the integration of the multilingual component of the software. These multilingual capabilities are presently under development.
